Alice C. Wood, 90, longtime resident of Springfield, and Harwich, on Cape Cod went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 1, 2010. She was a resident of Wingate Nursing Home in E. Longmeadow for 4 years.
Alice was born on August 19, 1919 in Springfield to the late Carl and Pethrea Fyhr, the youngest of four children. As a child she grew up in Feeding Hills, MA and attended local schools. She graduated from Commerce High School in 1938, and worked at Mass. Mutual for many years. She married the love of her life, the late Howard E. Wood on August 16, 1941 in Stockbridge, MA, and they spent 62 fun-filled years together. After living in Springfield for 30 years, she and Howard built a beautiful home on Cape Cod. Mom enjoyed sewing and was a seamstress in Harwich for 15 years. She and Howard were members of a couples bowling league, and had many mutual friends. They would spend hours working in their yard and walking the beaches of the Cape, collecting antiques, doing crossword puzzles, playing Bingo, and living each day to the fullest.
A caring, grateful, and compassionate woman, she touched countless lives with her kindness, and her beautiful smile. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, always incredibly proud of all of her family’s accomplishments.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Pethrea Fyhr of Sweden; her husband, Howard E. Wood; her brothers, Carl and Clarence; her sister Ginny; her nephew Karl; and many friends and in-laws.
She is survived by her son, Douglas H. Wood and his wife Lynn of Hampden, MA; her daughter, Barbara (Wood) Kulig and her husband Daniel of Spotsylvania, VA; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Samantha, Meaghan, Michael, Andrea, and Melissa; seven great-grandchildren, Brooke, Camren, Owen, Kayla, Kristopher, Cole and Ian; her sister-in-law Lil Fyhr; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Springfield, MA.
