Obituary for Douglas H. "Woody" Wood

Douglas H. "Woody" Wood
Hampden- Douglas “Woody” Wood, 59, of Hampden passed away peacefully on August 20, 2010. Born in Springfield to the late Howard Wood and Alice (Fyhr) Wood. Doug retired from the East Longmeadow Post Office in 1993 where he was a letter carrier. Growing up Doug was an enthusiastic athlete, especially loved hockey & football; and was an avid fan of the Red Sox & Patriots. Doug enjoyed working outdoors, the ocean, and was a very talented artist with an extraordinary gift for woodcarving.
Doug proudly built his dream house, a log home, and spent as much time as he could landscaping and doing yard work.
He served his country as a combat soldier in the US Army in Vietnam where he courageously earned two Bronze Service Stars, a Purple Heart, and received an Army Commendation Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters.
Doug was an extremely generous man, known for unselfishly putting his loved ones needs before his own. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, an ear to listen, or a shoulder to cry on.
In 1973 Doug married the love of his life, Marilyn (Devine) Wood and on August 10th they celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary. Doug also leaves his “three stars” daughters Jennifer and her husband Jeff Allard of Chicopee, Samantha of Hampden, and Meaghan of West Springfield; a sister Barbara (Wood) Kulig and her husband Dan of Spotsylvania, VA; three grandchildren Brooke, Camren, and Owen; as well as several cousins, an aunt, nieces, nephews, and friends. Doug’s kindness, humor, and smile will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
His family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Richard Steingart, the staff at both the D’Amour Center for Cancer Care and the Oncology unit at Baystate Hospital for their dedication and friendship.
Burial will be private for family members at the Veterans Cemetary in Agawam, Ma.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the D’Amour Center for Cancer Care 3350 Main St. Springfield, Ma 01199
